cb20’s Chris Pickett is Focused on Creating Culture That Attracts Talent

The IT company president and CEO is the leadership award winner among small employers for 2025’s Times Union Top Workplaces

Hiring for an IT company is intensely competitive, so cb20 decided to set itself apart five years ago by making a list of “aspirational” values and turning the business into a place that its founders wanted to work.

The company focuses on protecting its customers from cybersecurity risks, allowing them to run their businesses without interruptions from hacks, ransomware and malfunction.

It has grown rapidly since 2020 when it rebranded as cb20. At the time, there were only 20 employees. Now there are 92.

“We established a group of core values that were aspirational and supported our growth goals,” said President and CEO, Chris Pickett. “We hired people every quarter for the past four years. It’s been a tough hiring market, but our approach has consistently landed us top-notch talent.”

It’s tough because there are so many IT firms at which qualified candidates could work, he said. So he’s focused on building a culture that makes employees want to choose cb20.

Q: Employees say there is a “significant amount of collaboration to ensure the best course of action” – how do you make that happen?

A: I think it comes back to the culture that we’re trying to build here. We want it to be a two-way cooperation with teams, where their voices are heard. On our onboarding, we tell people we’re not always going to have the best idea. We want people to bring ideas forward and to speak.

Q: Employees say there are quarterly check-ins – what does that look like?

A: Our leadership is on a cadence to make sure they’re checking in quarterly on their annual goals. If they need to alter any course of action they can do that. Rather than waiting a year to tell an employee they did or did not do something.

Q: What is the current hiring outlook?

A: We expect to be well over 100 employees at the end of 2025. We’re focusing on quality, not quantity. Fill the open positions but not rush. I do believe culture’s been a big part of our growth. Maintaining that as you get to the size employer we are can be challenging.

Q: Does that mean you expect continued growth?

A: We’ve been growing revenue at 50% year-over-year for the last five years. We’re projecting to continue that in 2025. We expanded into New England and we are growing our audio-visual business. It’s a very exciting and big part of our growth. Everything from high-end auditoriums to small little conference rooms – design, implementation and support. We also purchased a 25,000-square-foot warehouse in Malta. We’re going to bring in customer products, configure them, set them up, so when we bring them to the customer there’s no disruption to their business.
